IRVING, Texas -Two seasons after
releasing one of his favorite players, Cowboys head
coach Bill Parcells appears to be ready to give Woody
Dantzler another chance.
The Cowboys are expected to re-sign Dantzler, a versatile athlete who has played several different positions, as early as Tuesday. Dantzler, who spent the 2002 season with the Cowboys before being released at the end of 2003 training camp, will likely be sent to NFL Europe this summer as a safety. The Cowboys are also expected to send running back Keylon Kincade, who spent this past year on the team's practice squad. Kincade, a former SMU standout, and Dantzler will likely join Kevin DeRonde, Marq Cerqua and Willie Blade as the Cowboys' five allocated players to NFL Europe this summer. Dantzler, who signed with the Cowboys in 2002, spent most of the season on the practice squad until being called up just before Thanksgiving. A former quarterback at Clemson, Dantzler was listed as a running back, but served primarily as a kick return specialist. Against the 49ers late in his rookie season, Dantzler came through with one of the NFL's top plays, returning a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. But during the off-season, which included the arrival of Parcells, the Cowboys wound up moving him to safety. However, Dantzler didn't make enough big plays in the return game during the preseason and didn't show enough potential at safety, forcing the Cowboys to release him. He was quickly signed by the Falcons, who used him to return punts and kickoffs and play sparingly at running back. He spent the 2003 season in Atlanta, but was released after suffering an ankle injury early last season. |
